Gearbox Entertainment, the company behind the fan-favorite series Borderlands, confirms that it has been acquired by Take-Two Interactive/2K. While this is not necessarily surprising, as rumors have swirled around Borderlands and Gearbox's status within Embracer Group for some time, it does come in the middle of the night, almost literally, for many fans around the world.
The announcement was straightforward: an image posted on Gearbox socials. Founder Randy Pitchford shared as much, commenting that Take-Two Interactive and 2K will help take the company to the next level. Of course, what that means remains to be seen, but part of this announcement is the confirmation that the «next iteration» of the Borderlands franchise is in active development, per Take-Two's release on the matter.
Take-Two/2K has released a statement on the matter, confirming the acquisition with an expected completion date by June 30, 2024. While the statement contains the standard jargon of such a business move, it also brings attention to the active development of Borderlands 4. As 2K president David Ismailer said, «We are thrilled to welcome Randy Pitchford and his team of passionate, talented developers to 2K and we look forward to releasing numerous projects in the future as colleagues. We have loved partnering with Gearbox on every iteration of the Borderlands franchise and are excited to be in active development on the next installment in the series.” Although exact details will likely come to light in the coming days, it's worth noting that this exchange between Take-Two and Embracer was made in the amount of 460 million USD.
Embracer, in this deal, retains certain IPs and companies, including Gearbox Publishing San Francisco, which shall be renamed. It also retains publishing rights to the Remnant franchise, Hyper Light Breaker, and more. Further details, such as what was sold exactly and what was retained, are below via Market Screener.
With this deal, it's worth noting that many such moves have been made by Embracer following its acquisition spree over the past few years. Gearbox is the latest in its ongoing reorganization, but it had previously divided purported KOTOR Remake developer Saber Interactive, issued several lay-offs, and reportedly canceled 30 projects within six months, including one for a new Deus Ex game.
Borderlands 3 is the fourth installment in the Borderlands series. In this looter shooter, players take missions from NPCs and seek out Vaults, similar to the rest of the series.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to introduce a bunch of new characters to the long-running franchise, from Owen Teague's primate protagonist Noa to Freya Allan's human Mae. It'll also welcome a new villain, too: Kevin Durand's Proximus Caesar.
Apple News is testing a new game for iOS 17.5 called Quartiles, which requires players to organize a grid of 20 syllables into 5 four-syllable words. Spotted by Gadget Hacks, the interface for Quartiles looks a lot like the New York Times’ newest hit, Connections. Did Apple News sherlock the New York Times?
Following Gearbox’s sale to Take-Two Interactive for $460 million, reports of layoffs at the development studio began to circulate. The number of layoffs is unknown, but while it officially confirmed the same, Gearbox Entertainment told Eurogamer that they’re not “tied” to the development of its titles.
Take-Two has announced plans to acquire Gearbox Entertainment from the embattled Embracer Group, in a deal reported to be worth $460 million. The buyout makes logical sense, as Gearbox Entertainment will operate under the framework of 2K Games, which has long been the publisher of the popular Borderlands series. It’ll be led by founder Randy Pitchford.
Following the sales of Saber Interactive (to a new company founded by Saber CEO Matthew Karch) and Gearbox Software (to Take-Two), the Embracer Group held an investors call to confirm the end of its dreaded restructuring program.
Borderlands 4 may not have been formally unveiled yet, but there’s little doubt in anyone’s mind that a new instalment in the highly successful franchise is indeed in development at Gearbox Entertainment. That, incidentally, has now been confirmed by the studio’s new parent company.
Embracer Group finally confirmed that it is selling Borderlands studio Gearbox Entertainment to Take-Two Interactive, but there’s a catch: Embracer Group will retain ownership of Gearbox Publishing.
Alongside the announced acquisition of Gearbox by Take-Two Interactive, publishing subsidiary 2K Games has also confirmed that the next Borderlands game is in active development.
Alongside announcing plans to buy Borderlands developers Gearbox from the collapsing wreckage of Embracer Group, Borderlands publishers Take-Two overnight casually mentioned that they are "in active development on next installment in Borderlands series". This isn't a formal announcement as much as a businessblast to hype shareholders, so it didn't have anything specific to say about what Gearbox are up to with their wildly popular and deeply unfunny looter shooter series. It had seemed curious that the much-delayed Borderlands movie was coming out five years after the latest main series game and with no new one in sight.
More major changes are afoot on the business side of the video game world, as a notable name is changing hands once again. Take-Two Interactive (the parent company of Grand Theft Auto publisher Rockstar and others) has agreed to buy Gearbox Entertainment from the embattled Embracer Group. The deal is worth $460 million in stock and is expected to close by June 30. It had been rumored for several months that Embracer was planning to sell off Gearbox.
