Popular life/farming sim Slime Rancher has had a sequel in the works for a long time, but it's now nearly ready to make the leap to PS5. Slime Rancher 2 has been in early access on PC and Xbox since 2022, and it'll soon add PS5 to the party when it arrives on 11th June, 2024.

Since it was first unveiled as Project Eve several years ago, Korean studio Shift Up’s Stellar Blade has been on the radar for many, and now the action title is celebrating its release. Between support for Dreams coming to an end, reductions in staff due to layoffs, and even the threat of being shuttered entirely, Media Molecule has suffered several blows over the last several months, though the studio best known for LittleBigPlanet and Dreams is continuing to trudge along. While the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 are excellent consoles, especially for those who don’t want to invest in a gaming PC, you tend to lose out on a lot if you don’t have one of Sony’s online subscriptions. You see, a PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) subscription offers, is access to online multiplayer, and without it, you can’t connect to online servers and play with other folks, which is a bit frustrating. Luckily, a PS Plus membership does offer some additional features, such as free games every month and access to some older PS games, all of which depend on which of the three tiers you subscribe to: Essential, Extra, and Premium.

Sony has just released the latest PS5 system software update — always a glorious day on Planet PlayStation. Coming in at just over 1GB, it's available to download and install now. The question is, as always, what does the update do?

A recent Helldivers 2 leak shows a highly durable mech called the EXO-49 Emancipator. Helldivers 2 features different types of stratagems, including exosuits that provide players with assistance in combat. These battle mechs make high-difficulty missions easier thanks to their excellent firepower and durability, allowing the driver to perform rapid shots and clear waves of enemies. Exosuits in Helldivers 2 also wield rocket launchers players can use to take down multiple enemies at once.

Sony announced the day one patch for Stellar Blade will remove an unintentional reference to a racist slur. While initial reviews for Stellar Blade lauded Shift Up's action-adventure game, one particular image taken from a review copy highlighted a likely accidental but problematic graphic in the game.

Recent Helldivers 2 leaks give players an insight into new enemies that reportedly belong to the Illuminate faction. A couple of weeks ago, Helldivers 2's news broadcast referenced «rumors of Illuminate sightings», sneakily teasing the return of aquatic species. Besides, some eagle-eyed players claimed to have seen blue laser beams in the sky, which they think were shot by Illuminate snipers.

According to a recently published patent, Sony is working on a program that would record in-game and voice chat audio and then convert those sounds into haptic feedback vibrations to be felt on a controller. A number of recent patents from Sony have focused on enhancements to the PlayStation controller's haptic feedback capabilities, and this latest filing has once again showcased the company's efforts to expand the use of haptic features.

Sony’s multiplatform release strategy has accelerated rapidly in recent years, with the company now viewing PC as a much more prominent part of its larger strategy, especially where live service titles are concerned. Earlier this year, for instance, Helldivers 2 launched simultaneously for PS5 and PC, and it’s fair to say that the majority of game’s unexpected success has been thanks to PC audiences. Now, interestingly enough, it looks like Sony might be considering ways to bring even larger audiences into Arrowhead Game Studios’ acclaimed co-op shooter.

Responding to a fan, Arrowhead Game Studios community manager confirmed that increased Helldivers 2 squad sizes likely won't be coming anytime soon. Helldivers 2 has been a massive success for both Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios, more so than anyone though considering the amount of issues the game suffered from at launch due to overwhelming numbers of players attempting to sign in. However, even the initial troubles were not enough to dissuade players from playing and Helldivers 2 continued to rapidly grow alongside the dynamic galactic war constantly shifting and evolving.

Update: It appears the PS Store jumped the gun somewhat, as it's now been confirmed Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will join EA Play on Thursday, 25th April 2024. Active members will be able to download and play the full game then.

The hype around PSVR 2 has largely died off just a year after its launch, though there’s no denying it’s a cool piece of tech. Making big strides from the original PSVR, the latest headset from Sony offers better graphics, improved tracking capabilities, and introduced the world to the sleek new Sense controllers, which make it easier than ever to interact with your virtual world.

Helldivers 2 launched exclusively on PS5 and PC on February 8, quickly becoming a phenomenon and rising up the charts to become one of the most played games on Steam. The co-op third-person shooter, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, broke the mould a bit when it launched simultaneously on Windows alongside the PlayStation platform. While it's not a first-party title, publishers Sony rarely release games under their banner on other platforms at launch. The overwhelming success of Helldivers 2, however, could be forcing the PlayStation parent to rethink its strategy. The game is now rumoured to be a subject of internal discussions over a possible Xbox release.

A creative Helldivers 2 player has produced a cool concept that would massively improve the game's Exosuit Mech Stratagem. LittleBigPlanet 3’s servers will remain offline permanently, Sony has confirmed. The servers first went down earlier this year as a temporary measure, due to technical issues. However, Sony has stated that due to the ongoing difficulties the LittleBigPlanet 3 servers will remain offline forever. This now means that there are now no LittleBigPlanet games online, which means players can no longer access the millions of levels that have been created over the years.

It's a bad time to enjoy platformers built on community level creations, as LittleBigPlanet 3 servers have shut down just a week after support for Wii U servers and Super Mario Maker were killed. But while Nintendo fans got to say goodbye to their game, the death of LittleBigPlanet came as a sudden shock.

Just under 10 years since its release, LittleBigPlanet 3‘s servers have been taken down. Sony confirmed that the servers for the game, which were originally offline temporarily in January 2024, will be kept offline indefinitely.

The video game industry is changing. As financial growth stagnates, companies like PlayStation have experimented with ways to adapt as markets and trends change. We see this with a bigger push into live-service and mobile games, but there’s another initiative that isn’t going to pay dividends in the near future but could set the groundwork for future success: the Hero Project.

PlayStation maker Sony is considering a purchase of movie studio giant Paramount, according to reports.

Helldivers 2 is an extremely popular game, far more than probably either Arrowhead or Sony hoped for. That said, it isn't perfect, and the developers are well aware of that.

Sony might be looking to acquire fellow media juggernaut Paramount, and this could affect the Halo live-action TV series. Halo isn’t typically associated with Sony due to the former being a flagship property of Microsoft’s Xbox gaming brand and the latter being the parent company for Xbox’s primary rival PlayStation, so such a development would certainly be a twist. For the past two decades, Halo has been one of gaming’s most seminal FPS franchises, spawning not only six mainline entries but an assortment of spin-off games and tie-in media.

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Starring Lara Croft (we're still not quite over that title) has just received a meaty new patch, and it's available to download now on PS5 and PS4. The headline addition is a new outfit for Lara, but beyond that is a huge laundry list of fixes and improvements.

Sony has today confirmed a new PlayStation overlay that will ship on its PC ports, with next month's Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut being the first to use it. You'll be able to access it from Windows PCs from either the in-game menu or by pressing «Shift + F1», which will pull up a new screen housing your PSN profile, friends list, and Trophies.

Everybody's Golf developer Clap Hanz will continue to broaden its horizons now it no longer has any formal partnership with Sony, as its next golf game will enter the virtual reality space, but it's only launching on Meta Quest headsets. The game, named Ultimate Swing Golf, releases next month on 16th May 2024 only on Meta Quest 2, 3, and the Pro variant.

Building on an article published overnight, The Verge has another post that largely reiterates past reporting from Insider Gaming covering what Sony has planned for its PS5 Pro and the upgrades it will bring to current games. Reported first at the start of April but now confirmed through more sources, Sony is reportedly allowing developers to tag their titles as «PS5 Pro Enhanced» after applying one of a few different upgrades.

If the new Alone in the Dark PS5 reboot has given you a classic survival horror itch, then Sony's subscription service PS Plus Premium is looking to scratch it. Available from Tuesday, 16th April 2024, the old PS1 terror Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare will be available to members on the top tier, complete with all the bells and whistles that come with the re-releases Sony accepts on the service. It's joined by MediEvil and Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire on the same day.

The immortal SEGA brawler Golden Axe is being resurrected as a comedic animated series, of all things. Ordered by Comedy Central and produced by CBS Studios in collaboration with Sony Pictures, the series will undoubtedly feature buxom men and women battling dragons and various beasts, and presumably, hilarity will ensue.

As if there was much doubting it at this point, the copyright claim of a YouTube video, which has resulted in its removal, points towards all of the PS5 Pro leaks being accurate. The video in question was posted by the channel Moore's Law Is Dead, and it had a hand in kickstarting the leaks that have since surrounded Sony's upgraded console. The copyright claim was, of course, filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment — and so it's easy to conclude that the information was bang on, at least to some extent.

Red Hook Studios has today confirmed Darkest Dungeon 2 will be releasing for PS5 and PS4 on 15th July 2024. Its DLC, The Binding Blade, is also being ported across to Sony systems, though you'll need to buy it on top of the base game. A discount is being offered to PS Plus members, and there'll also be an Oblivion Bundle containing all content available to pre-order. Check out the announcement trailer above.

News has been quiet on the acquisition front in recent days, at least when it comes to video game IP. However, according to a new report, Sony is currently in talks with a monied ally to acquire storied picture-house Paramount and all the cross-media potential such an addition would bring.

Fallout 4 launches its native PS5 version on 25th April 2024, but if you want to make that upgrade as cheap as possible, you might want to take a look at the current PS Store spring sale. Both the base PS4 game and all of its DLC are on sale at the cheapest prices they've ever been, and the offers expire the day before the PS5 version releases. As such, paying now will ensure you get the most amount of content for the cheapest price.

If you regularly use a PS5 or PS4, there's very little reason not to be using PS Stars. This rewards programme, currently only accessible via the PlayStation mobile app, rewards users with points for PS Store purchases, as well as neat little digital collectibles for completing simple campaigns. Part of the service also allows you to use your accrued points to redeem PS Store credit and, if you have enough, entire games and other digital goodies. It's these PS Stars rewards that have recently been refreshed, and there's some good stuff up for grabs — if you have the points.
