With many games doing a "GOTY" edition that includes the DLC nowadays, the
budget minded game would do well to just wait. For his paitence he can then pick up the game which includes the DLC, or at least has the DLC on a separate disc that can be installed to the hard drive. Oblivion did this. Fallout 3 did this. Dragon Age did this. Borderlands does...NOT do this? Yeah, it seems Borderlands GOTY edition doesn't actually include a disc with the DLC on it. Instead it includes codes you enter to get the DLC from Live Marketplace. This means if you don't have internet, you just spent $60 on an incomplete product. Yay! This also means a used copy of Borderlands GOTY is worth no more than just the plain old edition because the codes can only be used once, and you can't transfer DLC to another gamertag. It's interesting to note that there is a Borderlands add-on pack for sale for $20 new, which includes Zombie Island and Underdome Riot, and comes on an actual disc. So...what the heck, Take 2? Why the sudden kick to the groin for your fans? -- It's not broken. It's...advanced. |

I really see no problem with making the add-on proprietary to the end user who bought the disc right off and not be able to sell the DLC that gores with the disc. I mean, they are already giving the DLC as being part of the game for the same price as one paid for the game upon release. They are in it to make money, not to save you money. If you wait just another few months, the GOTY edition may be around $30. I got Oblivion GOTY for $15. I got Fallout 3 GOTY for my wife on the PC for $29. |

The box does not say you need Live or that it only includes coupons for the DLC, and not the DLC itself. In fact the box states "Includes all 4 addons..." which arguably makes it false advertising. A lot of people are rather upset by this, pointing to RE5 Gold, which pulled the same switcheroo. What's more confusing is that the PS3 version DOES include the addons on a second disc, so I'm really interested to hear how exactly does Take2 justify charging $60 for something you can get for $20 + MS1600 right now. Sorry, but a fold out map and early access to the beta of Duke Nukem Forever doesn't justify an extra $20. So there's really no point in buying this GOTY edition for the 360. Those who would like to have a physical copy of the game and its addons will need to buy the PS3 version. Otherwise just buy the game and DLC separately. For less. -- It's not broken. Then I can agree with you, but not with the premise that the DLC should be transferable upon re-sale. > > A lot of people are rather upset by this, pointing to RE5 Gold, which > pulled > the same switcheroo. > > What's more confusing is that the PS3 version DOES include the addons on a > second disc, so I'm really interested to hear how exactly does Take2 > justify charging $60 for something you can get for $20 + MS1600 right now. > Sorry, but a fold out map and early access to the beta of Duke Nukem > Forever > doesn't justify an extra $20. Bottom line, you have a choice and as I pointed out to GameJunkie, you can hold out for a year and get some GOTY edition, or not have the patience and buy it right away knowing you will have to pay for the DLC if you want said DLC. > > So there's really no point in buying this GOTY edition for the 360. Right now, you can get ME2 (for example) for $19.99, but if you buy all of the DLC, it will be more than the $60 initial cost of a new game without the DLC. You'd be better off getting the game with the DLC for less. In either case, since it is console, you cannot transfer the DLC you download anyway to another user, only the same gamertag that made the pruchase can use it or the same hardware on which it was initially used. Now, I can transfer my DLC up to 5 different PCs with nearly all of the games I have bought for PC and their respective DLCs. MS is the one putting out the restriction on the transfer in reality, not the developer and MS makes the money moreso by that limitation. |

The transfer issue is separate, and one that is going to become increasingly important in this new world of downloads. > Bottom line, you have a choice and as I pointed out to GameJunkie, you can > hold out for a year and get some GOTY edition, or not have the patience and > buy it right away knowing you will have to pay for the DLC if you want said > DLC. Well, that's part of the problem. After watching so many titles this generation release an all-inclusive package ~1 year after release, it was only natural to assume that Borderlands would do the same thing. Granted there was never a guarantee but I think it was a reasonable assumption. Oh, and I was mistaken - the PS3 version is equally brain dead and does not include the addons on disc...which makes even less sense since the blu-ray disc is surely large enough to hold them without needing a 2nd (or 3rd) disc as the 360 would need. And, yes, PS3 owners are equally upset about this for all the same reasons. -- It's not broken. It's...advanced. |
