Default OT: Lucas finally commits Star Wars to Blu-ray

http://bluray.ign.com/articles/111/1112481p1.html

Dear Mr. Lucas,

Please use the original material for the cantina (Han shoots first, got
it?!?!? good!) but if you wanna keep the re-release Death star explosion,
that's fine with me as the original was a bit anemic.

Thanks!

Your pal,

Khee Mao

The originals were "destroyed" when the special editions were made. We're
stuck with fan edits like A New Hope Revisited for now.

That's just an excuse. They have more than enough money to produce a
new set from extant film reels -- they don't need negatives. The
truth is that Lucas just wasn't happy with his original cuts and
doesn't want to put the time in to a truly great restoration of them.

So, when are they coming out in 3D?

It's not broken. It's...advanced.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a 3D release in another five years.
Lucas has been slow to release his movies on new formats -- the DVDs
took forever to come out, and so will the Blu-rays. If 3D Blu-ray
catches on (something I don't think is a sure thing, BTW), I wouldn't
be surprised if a big honkin 3D remastering happened for the Star Wars
films.

But since 3D is a waste of time, IMO, that's one I *will* pass on.
