Default TF2

Bollock-numbingly addictive, but a bit crap unless there's a modicum of
co-operation. The maps seem huge considering the 24 or 32 player limits- are
there any clans or servers where newbs can learn the ropes?

Look for servers with instant respawn, the gameplay are usually not that
serious on those
Not playing atm due to my current laptop is a bit limited when it comes
fluent graphics

Thanks (& thanks to Stri, too)

That's just the problem- I can see the attraction of TF2 being the
intelligence mix and interaction of the different classes (I used to play
D&D when I was a kid!), but the non-serious servers where beginners can last
more than a minute are just a frag-fest with no attempts to actually
achieving the map goal.

It would be a bit more acceptable is FF was on- not sure if that's
practical, though.

Hmm check the payload maps then? (prefixed with pl_)
There's a very distinct goal with attack/defense

Also capture point are somewhat decent (imo) but the capture intelligence
maps tends to be a bit chaotic

Yeah - I was on one of those earlier today. The little train thing was still
sitting at the start when I joined. There was nobody about, so I started
moving it by myself. When I got it to the first checkpoint, there was
suddenly a pile of people attacking, but it seemed to move faster when the
rest of the team came back to help.

I find it the other way around- but that's possibly because you need to be
familiar with the whole layout for capture point maps (which I'm not),
whereas the little arrow pair pointing to the two intelligence cases means
anyone can easily navigate the map even if they aren't familiar....

A bit odd as you'll loose the map if the payload is not delivered in due
time

At the end ofo this page you can find layouts for somee of the official maps
http://www.steampowered.com/status/tf2/tf2_stats.php#

I have mostly played cp_dustbowl, tc_hydro and pl_goldrush + pl_badwater
dustbowl is pretty obvious as far as the cp's goes and fast played

The "team" seemed more interested in frags. I've been playing CS:S with my
nine-year-old tonight, and between me, him and our bots, there was more
teamwork than on the TF2 servers I've used earlier today...

I've been around hydro for the developer commentary but not played it at
all - it seems huge. Dustbowl and goldrush are faves though (I think
goldrush was the one I was talking about where I pushed the bomb along the
track by myself for a while).

The layout changes for each round
I think hydro has 5 or 6 different layouts with a few twists
On a good server you can play the map all night without getting really bored
Some of the layouts are really good for sniping

> Dustbowl and goldrush are faves though

Capture point maps:
If a little bit of luck you can rush the capture point by using a mix of
pyros and scouts
If out of luck engineers has secured the area ...

Payload maps:
Observe that you get health and ammo when you're pushing the cart
When you reach checkpoints maptime is increased

Be glad you missed the updates that started the "achievements"
capabilities. You couldn't get anyone to do anything as they were all
trying to get their personal achievements.

Yes Goldrush is push the cart. I always liked Dustbowl. Good teams can
really over run bad. It's a capture the point with the 3 stages.

No - I've seen the "achievements" because I was so late buying TF2. I've
even got a couple myself! I assumed it was something that's always been part
of the game, so it didn't occur to me that other players might be chasing
them...
