Now that my son and I have finished Trine 2 I thought I'd give an
updated opinion... firstly, it looks amazing and remains great looking to the end. We both enjoyed it, but we also agreed it wasn't as good (or as long) as the first Trine. For starters, the larger sprites makes for a quieter game... less onscreen baddies -and now they're (mostly) kind enough to wait their turn to attack like a circle of ninjas in a bad kung fu movie. There are probably more numerous and complicated "puzzly bits" in Trine 2, which doesn't make it bad, but almost all are negotiable by having the wizard create a crate, then carrying a team-mate across, then switching characters for reciprocation (or worse... the 2nd character quit out after the first character gets across, then re-enter the game). Much as I hate doing things in this way, must admit it's hard not to once you know its an option. In Trine (1), discovering a chest was always a great moment. You could be certain you're about to get some great character advancement, which makes it worthwhile checking all nooks & crannies at all times. In Trine 2, you collect points which allows you to build your character traits at any time, so there's nothing in the lovely-looking chests that you're supposed to work hard to find except... paintings and poems... which you need to quit to menu to see. Even then, why would I?? Also, Trine 2 appears to have been attempting to tell a dare-I-mention-it? _story_ of some sort that had almost nothing to do with anything that I could see in "the game". It comes across as a shoddy, boring mish mash pillow-stuffing yawn-fest pointless shoe-horned add-on to an otherwise enjoyable side-scrolling adventure. In short, if you've not played either and you're only going to buy one Trine game this year... make it Trine (1). Better yet, wait until Trine 2 gets a release in this region and pickup Trine in the inevitable price-drop. -Kevin. |
