What's it used for in bike terms then?

Amazingly, lubrication.

Specifically, the chain and cranks.

Ah. I used to use oil last time I used anything on a chain. 3-in-1. Wet
lube, apart from sounding awful sounds like an excuse to charge more for
the same result. Maybe it's less runny?

On cranks I generally use my harrumph turn-away look of disdain in lieu
of a mallet.

It's pretty cheap. I actually expect it is just oil.

Quite.

But as distinct from a dry lubricant. Which is why there's a difference.

I was told wet lube was for wet conditions, and dry lube for dry
conditions, rather then the lube itself being "wet" or "dry", as they're
both wet.

The blurb on the lube I bought suggests this anyway.

I did another ten miles first thing on sunday - took most of the day for my
hands to warm up and that was with gloves on!

Mine's also a hybrid but towards the more off-road end of the scale.
I've had a few fun rides round the canal tow paths already and looking
forward to more of that in the summer.

Indeed. It was a bit chilly. Tonight's ride is going to be a *joy*, what
with the snow.

Problem here is it's either road (of varying quality) or dirt tracks
"fixed" with debris. You know when the farmers get muddy sinkholes and
just chuck rubble and rubbish and used heroin needles in them? That.
