It's two weeks worth of Play/Want/Bin to report today, if you like.
Play: =-=-= The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360) - Started a new character before the 360 died, went in the opposite direction of the quest marker and saw how well the radiant AI system is implemented. The Warriors of A'kir are running around on their way to Whiterun, stopping every Redguard woman they can get close to. A mercenary has been sent from one the other holds to see for herself why Helgen is on fire. There's news that one of the lore book authors is in Skyrim. And there's a headless horseman for some reason? I was tempted to do what I never did with Oblivion, which is to just ignore the main quest and try to carve out some sort of separate RPG experience here. Then I got bored for some reason, which probably has to do with repeating a battle with a Spriggan five times. Of course, now I really want to continue and the hardware's dead. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB) - Not the DX edition (which I never owned) but the original Gameboy cart (which I never owned either). I seem to recall that the first time I played the game, it was due to the practise of young men temporarily trading cartridges in order to share the limited riches of gaming media. Of course, this would have been in the mid-nineties, which meant that we were negotiating such trades at the coffee station rather than in the schoolyard. How do I get this stupid alligator to sell me a banana? Donkey Kong (CLV) - Had the Colecovision going because I picked up one of these just this past Friday: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Su...o_DSCF0353.JPG It looks lovely. And it's completely, utterly unusable. The symmetrical design is intended to allow for left-handed or right-handed use, but really it's got the ergonomics of a saddle horn. The 'up' direction on the stick is also dodgy, but I'm afraid that if I open it the elves magically contained inside will escape and I'll no longer have a working controller. Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics (Wii) - A lovely holiday gift. It's the same game it was the last four times, but the first one I've owned. Interestingly, the localisation for the US region puts the western hemisphere countries first in the selection list, but continues to call the team field event 'football' and not 'soccer'. I stink at the rhythm-based games, mostly because of age and bad eyesight now. Endless Ocean (Wii) - Not as formless or pointless as I was led to believe. There should be more family-friendly games that don't have little black dog noses at the end of all the faces, and where there's not a tremendous evil to conquer or a world to save. Ninja Assault (PS2) - I knew that Sega and Namco's light gun collaboration was something less than the sum of its parts. But holy hell, 35 percent accuracy in the first level earns you an S-rank? That's just a bad difficulty curve right there. Endgame (PS2) - Now *this* is more like it. A western-developed light gun game that somehow slipped through my radar. Judicious use of cut scenes makes it much more than a Time Crisis clone, in that every frame of animation reinforces the you-against-the-world setting. It feels desperate and like every shot matters, which in this case is actually true. I imagine I might have felt differently if I had paid full price. Two Worlds II (360) - Tiny text. Can't read. Opening cinema runs through twenty RPG stereotypes in the space of as many seconds. Saving this one for later. Want: =-=-= A Guncon2 peripheral (PS2) - See the Expenditure section below for more details. A new Xbox 360 (360) - See the Bin section below for more details. Bin: =-= My 360 (360) - It's definitively dead. No amount of cleaning or resoldering is going to fix this bad graphics chip. I figure four years of operation after the warranty RROD repair isn't actually worthy of complaint. I wonder how much the other parts are worth. Expenditure: =--=--=--= Time for a reset. If you'd like to participate, post your total for all of 2011 and I'll put together a fun-filled chart. Balance Forward - $1,886 Resonance of Fate (360) - $20 Two Worlds II (360) - $15 Nier (360) - Free! (buy-two-360-games-get-one-free) Disgaea 3 (PS3) - $15 Eureka Seven Volume 2: The New Vision (PS2) - $7 Sega Smash Pack (GBA) - $2 Endgame (PS2) - $2 (Woo! Original Guncon support.) Ninja Assault (PS2) - $2 (What? Guncon2 only? Ripoff.) Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GC) - $10 (bargain!) Star Trek Invasion (PSX) - $5 Outlaw Volleyball: Red Hot (Xbox) - Free! (with purchase) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB) - $3 Red Dead Revolver (Xbox) - $5 Gurumin (PSP) - $5 Stupid Invaders (DC) - $5 Super Runabout: San Francisco Edition (DC) - $5 Montezuma's Revenge (SMS) - $5 The Mafat Conspiracy (NES) - $3 Colecovision Super Action Controller (CLV) - $10 (so awesome!) Wico Colecovision Command Control Joystick (CLV) - $10 Total for 2011 - $2,015 (Damn. If only I'd spent $4 less.) -KKC, hunting around for his Golgo 13 cartridge. -- -- "Step 8: Make a list of all the persons I | kendrick have harmed, and file them alphabetically | @io-nyc.com for ease of reference." | - David Javerbaum, "The Last Testament" | |

However, I'm currently spending in the healing tree to keep both me and my NPC companion alive while we're doing so. My character is now level 19 and has his own spaceship which means that now I can do the space combat missions. They make me think of Lylat Wars (N64) for some reason (WHICH IS A GOOD THING) :-) While the game is pretty much generic MMO fayre in some ways, the storyline and cutscenes with dialogue choices makes it feel a 100 times more fun than the other MMOs I've played SpaceChem (PC) - mi brane hurtz. Skyrim (PC) - my attention has been taken away from this by SWTOR but I've spent a few hours wandering about killing and getting killed. > Want: > =-=-= Guild Wars 2 (PC) Diablo 3 (PC) - maybe Prey 2 (PC) - maybe Far Cry 3 (PC) Trackmania 2 Canyon (PC) > Bin: > =-= > Expenditure: > =--=--=--= I've done this in more detail in another thread but... £ 67.71 January £ 20.84 February £ 71.89 March £ 74.55 April £106.06 May £ 31.98 June £119.87 July £ 20.36 August £ 88.81 September £156.77 October £ 22.08 November £ 47.64 December so far... + £ 6.49 Morrowind GOTY (PC) £ 1.74 SpaceChem (PC) £ 1.74 Universe Sandbox (PC) So £ 57.65 December Total Which means that at the end of the 2011 £819.09 2011 Final total. ============================= So now it's 2012 £ 8.74 L.A. I think I clocked about 100 hours in the end, which is about what I did with Oblivion. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 (PC) - Thankfully very cheap. Played through this in a few hours, enjoying the first half way more than the second. The first couple of boss fights were pretty cool, but you get the feeling that someone said "okay guys, funding just got cut. Drop what you're doing and slap on the Vader level." when the game was about halfway finished. I bought a load of stuff in the steam sale for pennies, but the things I've actually played are: Tropico 4 (PC) - A nice and straightforward island management sim that's got a lot more going on than just the humor. Very much a better game than: Cities XL (PC) - which I bought to satisfy my desire for a citybuilder game. It's good at what it does and with the exception of the interface, it's well presented. Just a little cold in terms of experience I think. Tropico has lots of little asides popping up to keep you on your toes or thinking about the game...Cities just leaves you to it. Sonic Generations (PC) - I'm not a great fan of sonic, but I like the structure of this one so far. The game runs fantastically well at 720p on my PC. Solar 2 (PC) - I wish I had all the time in the world, as it would mean that I could waste a good portion of it playing this. I was finding myself playing it for a good couple of hours at a time over christmas, then exiting it and feeling like I'd wasted those hours. A smartphone version of this would be a better idea. > Want: > =-=-= A Vita. An Eee Pad Transformer Prime. > Bin: > =-= Fucking colds. I think this is the third, slightly different cold, that I've had in as many weeks now. My daughter is just getting over a full on chest infection that she managed to pick up in time for chrismas day, and the new baby sounds like we're drowning a pig in treacle when she's trying to go to sleep. |

Took me 73hrs to get to 75% completion so I could go on to complete the story (which I could have done anyway if I wanted). And then 11hrs to quick play the story on the hardest difficulty to get 1000G. Just goes to show what you would miss without achievements. You could probably finish the game to credits rolling in about 8hrs on casual difficulty but barely scratch the surface of what you can do in the game. With achievements for all sorts of additional stuff I got 84hrs of enjoyment out of it and excellent value for money. Band Hero (360) - I had one annoying online achievement left to get 1000G. Surprised to find a few people still playing online but managed to get the achievement using two gold accounts on the same console. Pullblox (3DS) - I quite like this. Nice easy, relaxing game to play in short bursts. > > Want: > =-=-= > A Kindle. Bought one for Mrs jochta for Christmas and I've read a book on it too. Really really nice. A new game to start. My daughter wanted to play Pullblox but she can only replay levels I have played as there is only one save. 3DS battery life. Really is pitiful, spends more time being charged than being used. 3DS screen resolution. Zen Pinball would be really great if it didn't look like LEGO after using the retina display. > > Expenditure: > =--=--=--= > Didn't keep tabs in 2011 but it wasn't a lot.
