Default Probably buying a 360 ...

Not trading the PS3 though.

Basically I want to play the new Gears, Forza and maybe Fable too.

As well as having a more stable platform for Skyrim, as I don't believe
bethsoft will ever fix it on the PS3. As they've had the same issues on every
PS3 game they've ever made.

Going to be getting the Slim 4GB, anything to watch out for? I plan to use a
spare 16GB USB drive for the current game install image, and any XBLA
titles/demos. I could have more than one stick, I guess. Internal memory will
be for saves, with backups to USB. It's only a /probably/ as it depends on my
either finding a preowned, or getting sufficient trade in value for other
items to bring the cost of the console plus at least Forza 4 and maybe a
preowned Fable and Skyrim (perhaps) down below £100.

Will my old XBL profile still be there I wonder? Anything I should watch out
for?

Plus, might get let back into the cabal, huh?

Do the slims still do VGA output? And component? They have wireless
networking too now, right? Without a 60 quid widget?

So not a complete upgrade then?

Wireless built in, component yes, VGA with the right cable.

Obviously the external drive won't support backward compatibility, but I'm
the only person who cares about that any more. But more importantly, 4GB
of on-board storage isn't enough to do disk installs or some types of
local DLC. Bethesda game expansions all require large local hard drives
last time I checked, but I haven't tried running them from USB storage
yet.

You can still sign on to the Live website without an Xbox and do all the
configuration and absurd avatar setup. Be aware that Microsoft wants your
real name now, in order to associate the new social networking and
Skydrive functions with an actual person.

I got New Vegas on 360. Played perfectly for 40 hours or so, then one
hard-played mission after another ended in a buggy non-climax and I gave
up. I won't be going back to any of their games. Maybe Skyrim will be
mostly fixed in a year or so, but I'm not sure I'd trust it even then.

Well maybe. If everyone else stops making games in the meantime.

Yes yes I know Skyrim is the best game ever and I'm losing out, etc.,
etc.. Missing things only matters if you miss them.

I got a preowned 4GB 360, Forza 4, Gears 3 and Skyrim.

I also downloaded my old profile! Lots of games, and nearly 2000 points still
on there.

I was wondering about a hard drive, but as I have nearly 20GB of flash
storage, I'll see how I get on with that. The hard drives are expensive.

That was fast. I fear I may be similarly spontaneous.

No chance that you still have your old one, is there? The enclosures
aren't cross-compatible, but the rumour is that you can extract the hard
drive from the old-style case and slot it into the 360 slim without
issues. The new model supposedly uses standard SATA connectors, and the
hard drive bay is supposed to be spacious enough to accommodate the bare
drive. I haven't tried it yet myself, by way of disclaimer.

So... The Forza 4 throws an Unreadable Disc error when trying to do the
install.

This really isn't going well. At least I managed to get my primary Windows
Live account to update to a real email address, not one that's been defunct
for over 12 months.

And now...

As long as the 360 has power, it does 'something' to the HDMI which means all
the TV will do is show a black screen. I only have one HDMI socket, so
everything goes through a manual switch, but if the 360 has mains, then all
you get on any switch position is /black/

Power off the 360 at the mains, all the other inputs start working again.

Trying a different switch box now.

If I were to get the (expensive) HD add on at some point, where does it go? I
can't see anywhere internal to put the thing. Or does the official Hard Drive
hang off a USB port?

There's a panel in the back that pops off for access to the hard drive
port. It doesn't attach to the outside the way the old hardware did it,
which is actually reassuring. Did you not read the manual?

-KKC, who reads the manuals for cookware.
