It references previous games but no knowledge of those events is required. If you're curious, the major cut scenes are all upscaled and available for viewing before you actually jump in and play. Yakuza 4 may be the best introduction to the series you could get. Having the four different protagonists is excellent fun, and leaves you wanting more. If I had to do it all over again I would probably have played Yakuza 4 before I started the third game. Out of curiosity, what sort of expectations are you going in with? Most seem to approach the game as an eastern Grand Theft Auto, when really the best way to look at it is Shenmue with blackjack and hookers. -KKC, who has 45 minutes before the vault door shuts. -- -- "Step 8: Make a list of all the persons I | kendrick have harmed, and file them alphabetically | @io-nyc.com for ease of reference." | - David Javerbaum, "The Last Testament"

Shenmue would be better than GTA, as I don't really like GTA much ![]() Just after something japanese really. Not played anything japanese adventurery for far too long. |

Twenty minutes with Yakuza 4 and you'll be introducing yourself on the Internet as HarpingOnDesu. Pay close attention to the quests, asit's possible to miss out on specific events if you're not careful. You'll get an opportunity to swap out among all four characters near the end, but initially you're restricted to playing only one at a time and you won't have an chance to continue grooming hostesses as the loan shark while you're training fighters as the prison escapee. -KKC, who wonders what Animal Crossing would be like with blackjack and hookers. -- -- "Step 8: Make a list of all the persons I | kendrick have harmed, and file them alphabetically | @io-nyc.com for ease of reference." | - David Javerbaum, "The Last Testament"

You'd probably still get screwed by the racoon, but you'd pay your mortgage off a lot sooner! Also, you wouldn't have to get a boat to the island for coconuts. |

Playable without doing 1,2, and 3? it is - but they are very similar that means if ( like me ) you end up loving one, you'll want to play the other anyway. if you can imagine a Japanese rpg, set in a gta style world - but without cars, you're halfway there. put a couple of hundred hours into yakuza 3 and 4 - they grabbed me within half an hour - the fight system is so satisfying - very crunchy and brutal. -- Gareth.
