I wanted to take a minute to say that I appreciate hearing about
everyone's gaming each week. I'm inspired to try new games and new genres when I see the diversity of experiences, and if I'm not sure if a game is worth buying I trust the impressions of UGVM posters over any professional reviewer or industry press. Play: =-=-= The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360) - I dislike the Thieves Guild missions, so I reverted to an earlier save and I'm choosing not to pursue that story line. I did accidentally kick off the Dark Brotherhood plot though, and I'm hoping that it turns out to be a little more morally ambiguous than it did in Oblivion. In the mean time, I'm whittling down my miscellaneous quest list so that I don't have to scroll it, and I've picked up the useful shout that makes dragons land on the ground. I am starting to find the dragon fights annoying, mostly because they never come after me and decide to fry mudcrabs and bandits, which disrupts my travels. Doing the Nirnroot mission in Black Reach was something of a breath of fresh air, in that I could count on there being no dragon attacks down there. Ninety Nine Nights II (360) - A pleasant surprise. This game may have the best non-tutorial intro segment I've ever played. It doesn't pour the complexity over your head, it just gives you simple goals and points you at them. The way the graphics are structured, it feels less isometric than its somewhat bland predecessor, but it feels more immersive. I get strong Diablo association with this game, but at five times the speed. The story isn't half bad either, although it's full of half the usual cliches. Here's hoping my attention span is up to the challenge. Emulator acrobatics (PC) - Getting a DOS VM running on my Asus EEE so I can play Daggerfall and/or Arena is something I keep meaning to do when I have some spare time. Want: =-=-= Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity (PSP) - There's an ever decreasing chance that the expansion to the original (sequel) game will be released in the west. I hold out hope for Vita updates of all the late PSP titles we've missed out on, but they're likely as not to be download exclusives too. Yakuza: Dead Souls (PS3) - Sega's getting better at the marketing, if only because younger heads are in charge of that particular activity now. Their blog has new media to remind us all that this is out in March, to be somewhat overshadowed by whatever sports or shooter update comes out then. Having Ryuji Goda from Yakuza 2 as a playable character is sheer brilliance, and clearly separates this title from the regular continuity. Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition (360/PS3) - All the DLC on the disk? I'm sold. And I was just about to ask for the original April release for Christmas too. I can wait until February. Seems like Warner Brothers adopted Midway's dumb-ass marketing methods as well as purchasing their properties. Bin: =-= This week? Non-gaming bin entries. Expenditure: =--=--=--= Oh dear. Balance Forward - $1,727 Syphon Filter (PSX) - $2 Syphon Filter 2 (PSX) - $2 Syphon Filter 3 (PSX) - $4 Monopoly (PSX) - $3 Tom Clancy Triple Pack (Xbox) - $6 Hulk (Xbox) - $4 Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift (PS2) - $3 Gungrave Overdose (PS2) - $4 Total year-to-date - $1,755 -KKC, who has some interestingly unrealistic work deadlines in December. -- -- "Step 8: Make a list of all the persons I | kendrick have harmed, and file them alphabetically | @io-nyc.com for ease of reference." | - David Javerbaum, "The Last Testament"

Started off as a mage, but I hate being locked out of things. So I'm doing these to get sneak, and lockpick up. I figgure that there will be lots of locked 'things' to pick, and so far, turns out I'm right. I likely won't complete the questline for the theives guild. I'm just using them at the moment. They don't seem to know it though. Mu-ha-ha. I'll be doing my 'proper' job afterwards, which is to become archmage. Skyrim isn't grabbing me the same way Morrowind, Oblivion, F:3 and F:NV did. I don't know why I'm not connecting with my character like I usually do. I'm too far in to start again (I think) - about 25 hours. So I think I'll have to stick with it. Perhaps I'll get more engaged at some point. > Want: > =-=-= Um. Nothing. > > Bin: > =-= > Nothing > |

They don't seem to know it though. Mu-ha-ha. They lifted the lockpicking mechanism from Fallout 3, so I was comfortable enough with it to be able to get into just about any lock without skill specialisation. Just about every dungeon has that one chest with the lock past your abilities that's good for levelling up on. >Skyrim isn't grabbing me the same way Morrowind, Oblivion, F:3 and F:NV >did. I hear anecdotally that old-fashioned paper RPG players are turned off by the lack of visible stat numbers in the game. I think it's a brilliant simplification of the system, but it is a radical break from all the previous entries in the series. -KKC, working on making Daggerfall run on his laptop. -- -- "Step 8: Make a list of all the persons I | kendrick have harmed, and file them alphabetically | @io-nyc.com for ease of reference." | - David Javerbaum, "The Last Testament"

That whole 'constellation' perk thing annoys me, as I can see myself 'perking' myself into a corner, and am obsessing about it, not in a good way. The magic system is irrationally annoying too. Why can't I have different spells assigned to the D-Pad for example? (or can I?) |

Well, finished the story anyway. It's in just about every way a fundamentally awful game, but it's brilliant. There are few things more fun in gaming than racing across the city in a VTOL, coming across a gang hideout, switching to hover mode and dropping a pile of rockets on it, gaining height and disappearing into the distance again. Just got to do a bunch of activities, find a load of collectibles and then assess whether or not the challenges are doable without spending 5 years on it. Put in 15 hours so far, feels a lot longer, but it's great fun. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) Not as much as I should've. Done the first four 50cc GPs. It's very lovely. Halo Anniversary (360) Just the second level. Struggling a bit on Heroic cos I'm shit at games, but I will persevere. It's great. > Want: > =-=-= Nothing apart from a few free weeks to play all the games I've got queued up. > Bin: > =-= Nothing much. > Expenditure: > =--=--=--= Zelda: Skyward Sword LE (Wii) - £0.99 Mario Kart 7 (3DS) - £29.85 -- Zo |

The beta finishes today and doesn't launch until the 20th, though I should get early access. However I won't be getting the full 5 days I suspect as I had to re-preorder the game as GAME had failed to send me the code to register for it. Oh and met an NPC whose last name is Everton. Skyrim (PC) - Due to work in the house, I've not been able to play this over the past few weeks so I decided to start from scratch and looking at some sort of melee/magic hybrid character. > Want: > =-=-= Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC) + Guild Wars 2 (PC) Prey 2 (PC) - maybe Far Cry 3 (PC) Trackmania 2 Canyon (PC) Mario Kart 7 (3DS) > Bin: > =-= Wife being made redundant for Christmas because they decided they only needed one admin and they decided to keep the girl who started last year instead of my wife who'd been there since 2008. > Expenditure: > =--=--=--= > £ 67.71 January £ 20.84 February £ 71.89 March £ 74.55 April £106.06 May £ 31.98 June £119.87 July £ 20.36 August £ 88.81 September £156.77 October £ 22.08 November December so far... £ 4.50 Terraria - bought a 4 pack to give some copies to friends -- XBLA/PSN/Steam/Twitter: merseymal ? the ? of Wolverines on ? Hugs? > Play: > =-=-= The Be Awesome And Fix My NES Game (RL) The PSU was fuxxored so I bought a new one from consolegoods.co.uk. I think the propriator, Robert Webb (no, not that Robert Webb - another one) may even be ugvm alumni. Anyhoo, I was sceptical because the NES needs a 9V *AC* adapter at 1.3A, and this was a 9V DC at 400mA. I read up a bit about it and it turns out that much of the current is needed to actually convert to DC internally, and in fact, theres no way in hell a NES can actually draw more than 600mA and using a DC source is in fact fine. So I plugged it in and... Der Blinkenlight. Boo! Stripped the NES down, cleaned the contacts on the 72 pin connector, and while I was in there did the region/security mod which was far too easy. Put it all back together and... Grey (that's "gray", for KKC) screen. Bah. Stripped it down again and looked at the pins on the 72 pin connector. Realised that a combination of age and vigourous cleaning had bent all the pins inwards, so prised each and every one out. Put everything back together (again) and TA-DAAAHHH!!! IT LIVES! Celebrated by playing the "cream" of NES games - Mega Man II, Bart vs the Space Mutants, Bart vs the World, Dragon's Lair, Totally Shi^H^H^HRad, Jurassic Park, The Adventures of Bayou Billy, Probotector (Contra, KKC) II and Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers. EFFING AWESOME. Also, I played: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (360) Which I completed. It was awesome. Still have a lot of Leonardo related stuff to do, and guild and shop quests, but it still felt a lot shorter than AC2 for some reason. Zen Pinball (3DS) Which is also awesome. Love seeing friends scores pop up to beat as you play. Acebest. > Want: > =-=-= Batman, Skyrim, Mario 3D, Mario Kart, you know. All them. > Bin: > =-= Too many 3DS game releases. I simply don't have the time or money to keep up.
